Somerset. Land of rolling hills, legendary cider, jaw-dropping cheese rolls, and carpets that have seen things. If you live here long enough — between the muddy festivals, the wet winters, and the general country-living chaos — your floors are going to need a professional.

We’re Sheen Services 1988. We’ve been cleaning carpets and upholstery across Somerset, Bath, and Bristol for over 37 years, and we can tell you with absolute confidence: the county produces some truly spectacular stains.

This one’s for you, Somerset.

Fun Fact #1: Somerset Has Been Getting Muddy for Centuries

Here’s something to make you feel better about the state of your living room carpet: Somerset has been famously boggy since prehistoric times. The Somerset Levels — that vast, flat expanse stretching between the Mendip Hills and Exmoor — were once an ancient inland sea. The people who lived here thousands of years ago built wooden walkways over the marshland just to get around. The oldest of these, the Sweet Track near Glastonbury, dates back to around 3806 BC.

So when your carpet looks like it’s taken a direct hit from the Somerset Levels after a wet school run, you’re basically continuing a proud local tradition.

The difference is: unlike our prehistoric ancestors, you don’t have to live with it.

The Somerset Mud-to-Mess Multiplier

Let’s be honest about what life in Somerset actually involves.

Whether you’re in Wells — England’s smallest city and arguably its most beautiful — or you’re tucked away in Frome, known these days as the coolest small town in the UK, or you’re commuting out of Taunton or winding down in Yeovil, the story is the same. You come home. Your boots are not clean. The dog is not clean. Nobody is clean.

Add in the Glastonbury Festival — which, fun fact number two, takes place on a dairy farm in Pilton, just a few miles from Wells — and you start to understand why professional carpet cleaning is practically a public service in this county.

Shepton Mallet, Frome, Bath, Bristol — every town we cover has its own version of this story. The countryside is gorgeous. The weather is unpredictable. And somewhere between the two, your carpets take the hit.

That’s where we come in.

What “Professional” Actually Means (Without the Jargon)

Here’s a question we get a lot: “Can’t I just hire one of those machine things from the supermarket?”

Short answer: you can. Long answer: there’s a reason those machines rent for £30 and professional cleaning costs more.

Hire-a-machine cleaning uses cool water and low pressure, which basically just redistributes the dirt and leaves your carpets wet for two days. It’s the cleaning equivalent of pushing your mess under the bed — technically it’s moved, but it hasn’t gone anywhere.

We use hot water extraction (think of it like a very precise, very powerful steam clean) at the right temperature and pressure for each fabric type. Synthetic carpet? Hot water extraction, full power. Wool carpet? Same method, but we drop the temperature below 25°C and use only WOOLSAFE-approved chemistry. Delicate upholstery? We assess it fibre by fibre before we touch it.

Why does the wool thing matter? Because wool carpets — common in Somerset homes given how many lovely traditional properties there are across the county — can shrink, felt, or discolour if cleaned incorrectly. We’re one of a small number of operators in the South West to hold WOOLSAFE certification, which means manufacturers and wool bodies trust us to clean the expensive stuff safely.

We’re also NCCA Gold Members — that’s the National Carpet Cleaners Association, and Gold membership is the top level. It’s the equivalent of having a Michelin star for carpet cleaning, if you’ll allow us that comparison.

Fun fact #3: Somerset produces around 25% of England’s cider. The county has over 700 orchards. We mention this because cider is delicious, but we’ve also cleaned more than a few cider-related carpet incidents in our time. If you know, you know.

Why Local Experience Actually Matters

37 years. More than 5,000 residential and commercial projects. And almost all of them within a 20-mile radius of Somerset’s towns and villages.

That’s not a boast — it’s context. Because local experience means we know things a national chain doesn’t.

We know that older stone properties in Wells and around the Mendip Hills tend to have more humidity, which affects how long carpets take to dry and which cleaning methods work best. We know that the rental market in Bath and Bristol means there’s high demand for end-of-tenancy cleaning that genuinely passes inspection. We know that Glastonbury’s mix of independent retailers and older buildings often comes with flooring that needs careful, low-moisture treatment.

We’re not a call centre. We’re a family business. Lydon and his father have been doing this since 1988, and every job we take on gets the same level of attention we’d give our own home.

(Which, for the record, is very clean. Occupational perk.)

Fun fact #4: The world-famous Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling event takes place just over the border in Gloucestershire, but Somerset has its own version of chaotic tradition at events like the Glastonbury Carnival — one of the UK’s most spectacular illuminated processions. We’ve never cleaned a carnival float, but we’re not ruling it out.

Our Guarantees — Because We Mean What We Say

We’re going to say something a bit unusual for a cleaning company: we’re honest about the fact that not every stain comes out.

Some stains are chemically bonded to fibres. Some are old enough to have become part of the carpet’s history. We’ll always tell you upfront what’s achievable before we start, and we’ll never promise miracles.

But here’s what we do promise:

100% satisfaction guarantee. If you’re not happy with the result, we’ll come back and put it right — or refund you. No arguments.

10-day spot return guarantee. Some stains come back after cleaning as the deeper layers wick upwards. If your spot returns within 10 days, we come back and treat it at no charge.

That’s not marketing copy. That’s just how we operate.

Ready for Carpets That Look Like Somerset on a Good Day?

Clean carpets. Clean upholstery. Clean hard floors. Done properly, by a team that’s been doing this since before most of our customers’ children were born.

Whether you’re in Bath or Bristol, Taunton or Yeovil, Glastonbury or Shepton Mallet — if you’re within our 20-mile radius, we’d love to come and see what we can do.

Fun fact #5 (bonus): Somerset’s county motto translates roughly as “I defend the country around me.” We think that’s a pretty good motto for a cleaning company too.
